Williamsville North senior Harry Wang won two matches Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the New York State High School Tennis championship at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
Wang, who won the Section VI title and is bound for Lehigh University, scored a 6-0, 6-1 first-round win over Adrien Conrads of the Albany area. Then Wang defeated Long Island’s Jack Flores, the Suffolk County champion, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Wang’s quarterfinal opponent is the No. 2 seed in the state, Yorktown’s Sean Wei.
The other two singles players from Section VI, North Tonawanda’s Greg Hastings and Sweet Home’s Jonah Murphy, lost their first-round matches. Hastings won his first consolation match. The Olean doubles team of Logan Cross and Ryan Brown won their first match but then were defeated in the second round. The doubles teams of Noah Sayoc and Declan Watson from Orchard Park and Jason Berkun and Jerry Xiao from Williamsville East still are alive in the consolation bracket.
The event continues Friday and Saturday.
