Teen admits to attempted holdup of Tonawanda bingo game

Deandrea Franklin, 17, pleaded guilty Friday in the attempted robbery of bingo volunteers during a game last month at Cardinal O'Hara High School in the Town of Tonawanda, said Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn.

On the night of May 6, Franklin walked into a classroom where the bingo proceeds were being counted at Cardinal O'Hara High School, 39 O'Hara Road, court officials said. She pointed a handgun at five volunteers aged 63 to 71 and demanded money, officials said.

The volunteers attempted to restrain Franklin, who fought back, injuring two volunteers. One volunteer suffered broken ribs and the other suffered a large bite wound, officials said.

The volunteers eventually subdued and disarmed Franklin and held her for Town of Tonawanda police, officials said.

Franklin faces a maximum of seven years in prison when she is sentenced at 9:30 a.m. July 11 by Erie County Court Judge Thomas P. Franczyk.
