What to know: As the son of Stanley Cup-winning defenseman Adam Foote, Callan has big skates to fill. With size 16 feet, he’s already well on his way.
Growing up in NHL rinks has allowed Foote to develop an impressive hockey IQ. His dad was a physical player, but Callan Foote excels by using his skills and hockey sense to find the right spot on the ice. He’s rarely out of position. His positioning instincts allow him to defend well and find the open spots in the offensive zone. He led Kelowna’s defensemen in points and was second on the team in assists.
While his size is a plus, Foote is not nearly as hard to play against as his father. His shot isn’t the best, but he’s had the opportunity to use it in 32 playoff games during the past two years. He still has work to do on his skating.
They said it: “I remember one game I was on the bench and watching him, he was the top guy on the power play and he was quarterbacking the whole thing. At a young age he was faking slap shots, sliding it over, giving the guy on the half wall more time. Little things you see elite pros do and he was doing it at a young age." – Colorado forward Matt Duchene, who lived with the Footes early in his career, to NHL.com.
