A Payless shoe store in Dunkirk has just been added to a list of locations the company will close.
The Kansas-based chain previously announced the closing of 400 stores, which included ones in North Tonawanda, Hamburg, East Aurora, Amherst and Clarence. Now, an additional 408 stores have been added to the chopping block, including the one in Dunkirk's Vineyard Plaza, 3964 Vineyard Road.
Payless filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April and said the closures were part of the company's reorganization plan. In a statement, Payless CEO Paul Jones called the closures a "difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify."
The company was founded in 1956 and has more than 4,400 stores in more than 30 countries.
