Teachers and children use the Giving Garden at Union Pleasant Elementary School as an outdoor classroom throughout the school year, and the garden will be open to the public for tours and a "living fair" from 4 to 8 p.m. June 9.
Run by the small nonprofit Seeds of Living Education (SOLE), the children's community garden has been growing since 2009. SOLE’s mission is to encourage lifelong, nutritious eating habits by offering school children a hands-on, educational experience in a "living classroom." The group was started by parents who wanted to improve school lunches.
The garden is available to teachers from September through June, and families and volunteers help maintain it through the summer months.
The June 9 event at the garden at 150 Pleasant Ave. is free. Vendors, including small local businesses and farms, will be there.
