Prospect watch: Top prospect for the Bisons is first baseman Rowdy Tellez. The top Tigers prospect with Toledo is pitcher Joe Jimenez, rated No. 5 by MLB.com. He’s on the DL. He wasn’t even drafted but he has risen fast in the organization thanks to a fastball that goes 95 to 98 mph.
Aging Mud Hens: Toledo entered the season with the oldest roster in the International League, with an average age of 29.6 years. Just one of the parent Detroit Tigers’ top 20 rated prospects is at the Triple-A level. The Detroit farm system was depleted during the team’s run to four playoff appearances from 2011 to 2014. The Tigers’ payroll ranks among the top five in the major leagues for a fifth straight year. Only the Dodgers, Yankees and Red Sox currently have a larger payroll this year.
