What to know: No matter where Mittelstadt plays – high school, the United States Hockey League or the U.S. National Team Development Program – he plays well. Really well.
The offensive juggernaut was voted Minnesota’s Mr. Hockey after averaging 2.56 points per game as a senior at Eden Prairie. He started and finished the season with Green Bay of the USHL, and he led the league with 1.25 points per game. He recorded 13 goals, including four game-winners, and 30 points in just 24 outings.
Already possessing NHL size, Mittelstadt is good at possessing the puck. He knows how to position his body, shield the puck from defenders and has the quickness to dart away. He’s planning to attend the University of Minnesota, so he’s likely a few years away from joining an NHL organization.
They said it: “We’ve watched him play against his peers in international tournaments and have seen him play in the USHL and at various camps, and he always makes a difference. It doesn’t really matter where he plays because you get the same game from him no matter the environment.” – Dan Marr, director of NHL Central Scouting.
The Buffalo News is profiling prospects leading up to the NHL Draft, which will be held June 23-24 in Chicago.
