A tractor-trailer driver died when his rig veered off the I-90 westbound Thruway near Exit 56 in the Town of Hamburg about 7:52 p.m. Sunday, according to State Police.
The rig crashed into a house at 4377 Highland Pkwy., but no one in the house was reportedly injured. According to a State Police report, the rig was loaded and struck a utility pole after veering off the Thruway and then striking the house at the dead end of Highland Parkway.
The State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit was at the scene late Sunday with Hamburg Police and Big Tree Fire Department units. The fatal accident remained under investigation late Sunday. No information was released about the rig driver, the contents of his truck or where he had been heading on the Thruway.
Fire personnel on the scene said the driver may have suffered a medical emergency.
On Sunday night, the right lane of the I-90 westbound near Exit 56 was reported blocked due to low-hanging utilities wires as a result of the fatal crash. Delays on that section of the I-90 were expected to continue for some hours due to the fatal incident.
