The American Red Cross on Sunday received a $25,000 donation from restaurateur Russell J. Salvatore to support transportation of donated blood to Western New York hospitals.
In 2016, 62 Red Cross volunteers made more than 1,800 trips in Blood Services vehicles. They logged over 214,000 miles delivering blood to area hospitals and transporting just-donated blood to be processed in Henrietta, outside Rochester, according to a news release.
The Red Cross must collect nearly 14,000 blood and platelet donations every day because blood and blood products have a limited shelf life. In the New York-Penn Blood Region, approximately 1,000 units are collected daily to serve patients in about 90 hospitals. Donors of all types are needed. Appointments to donate blood can be made by visiting redcrossblood.org, calling 1-800-REDCROSS, or downloading the free Blood Donor App.
Salvatore presented the donation at his Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More restaurant on Transit Road.
