Olean's first-inning blitz produces Class A title, first trip to regionals

NIAGARA FALLS – Olean pounced early en route to securing a historic moment for its baseball program Saturday.

The Huskies defeated Williamsville South, 9-2, at the Niagara Falls High School Athletic Complex to capture the Section VI overall Class A championship.

An estimated 500 watched as Olean scored six runs in the top of the first to seize control for good to earn the team's first trip to the Far West Regionals.

The Huskies (17-1), winners of 17 straight games, next face the Section V champion next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Frontier Field.

Olean scored six times on seven hits in the top of the first inning to get the jump on a Billies' team that had allowed just one run over its past three games – which included Wednesday's triumph over last year's state runner-up Williamsville East in the Class A-1 final.

Clean-up hitter Dylan Vincent's RBI single drove in the first run. Zach Parr then pounced on a hanging breaking ball and drove in two runs with a single. Later in the inning, Joe Jedrosko smoked a two-run double to left. Speedy senior Garrett Boldt, who led off the game with an infield single and scored, capped the blitz with a sacrifice fly to score winning pitcher Bryan Bizzaro.

Bizzaro went five innings, limiting the Billies (13-6) two hits and no runs.

Two years ago in the Section VI overall Class A final, Olean lost via walkoff in the eighth inning to Hamburg, 2-0.
