What to watch for Saturday
1. Baseball - Section VI Class A, B, C & D finals
Sectional championship week continues Saturday with four of the five baseball finals to determine regional qualifiers.
- Williamsville South (A-1) vs. Olean (A-2), noon at Niagara Falls
- Alden (B-1) vs. Fredonia (B-2), noon at Gowanda
- Allegany-Limestone (C-1) vs. Maple Grove (C-2), 3 p.m. at Diethrick Park, Jamestown
- 1-North Collins vs. 3-Brocton, noon at Diethrick Park, Jamestown
Williamsville South took out defending champ Williamsville East with a 2-1 win in Wednesday's Class A-1 final. That snapped a five-game losing streak to the Flames.
Olean, meanwhile, rode the pitching and offensive performances of Garrett Boldt to a 7-2 win over Lew-Port in the A-2 final. He hit two doubles, scored twice and allowed one earned run in six innings on the mound.
Reigning champ Fredonia and Alden meet in the Class B title game for the second year in a row. The Hillbillies won a 5-3 game last season to earn a berth to the Far West Regionals.
Alegany-Limestone and Maple Grove both knocked off the No. 1 seeds in their respective classes on Wednesday. The Gators won a convincing 7-1 game over Silver Creek/Forestville. The Red Dragons won a 4-2 game over Barker.
North Collins rolled Pine Valley, 13-0, in the Class D semifinals to earn a spot in today's championship. No. 3 Brocton edged No. 2 Franklinville, 2-1, on Thursday.
2. Softball - Section VI Class C-1 & C-2 finals
The two Class C finals at Prommenschenkel Park in Dunkirk were postponed for the second day in a row yesterday due to the effects of Thursday's rain showers.
- 3-Cassadaga Valley vs. 4-Chautauqua Lake, 5 p.m.
- 1-Portville vs. 3-Maple Grove, 7 p.m.
The offense has been grooving for Cassadaga Valley with 23-1 and 8-1 wins in the playoffs so far. The Cougars take on Chautauqua Lake, which upset defending Class C sectional champ 1-Cleveland Hill with a 4-2 win on Tuesday.
Portville has scored 23 runs and hasn't had a run cross the plate against it so for this postseason. Maple Grove went 6-8 during the regular season but picked up 12-2 and 5-2 wins over Randolph and Silver Creek, respectively, on its way to today's final.
The overall Class C championship is Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. back at Prommenschenkel Park.
3. Baseball/Softball - Section VI Class AA semifinals
The Class AA baseball and softball finals between Lancaster and Williamsville North were postponed from yesterday to this afternoon at Clarence High School.
- 1-Lancaster vs. 4-Williamsville North, 2 p.m.
- 1-Lancaster vs. 5-Williamsville North, 2 p.m.
Orchard Park awaits in Tuesday's softball final after a 7-2 win over Niagara Wheatfield yesterday. The baseball winner plays No. 2 Clarence in the final. More info on that below:
4. Baseball - Georgetown Cup quarterfinals
No. 3 St. Francis hosts No. 6 Nichols at 6 p.m. in a quarterfinal matchup that was postponed from Thursday.
The winner faces No. 2 St. Mary's of Lancaster or No. 7 Cardinal O'Hara, which was moved from Friday to Sunday at 6 p.m. at Northtown Center.
No. 4 St. Joe's, which won a 4-0 game over No. 5 Bishop Timon-St. Jude yesterday, faces No. 1 Canisius in the other semifinal. The best-of-three series starts Tuesday.
5. Track & field - ECIC & CCAA Championships
The ECIC and CCAA track and field championships wrap up with their second day of competition on Saturday.
The ECIC Championships at Hamburg High School start at 11 a.m. The CCAA Championships at Dunkirk High School start at 10 a.m.
Next up is sectionals on June 2 and 3 at Jamestown High School. Both days start at noon.
