What to watch for Friday
1. Softball - Class C-1 & C-2 finals (POSTPONED to Saturday)
The two Class C finals at Prommenschenkel Park in Dunkirk were rescheduled due to rain yesterday.
- 3-Cassadaga Valley vs. 4-Chautauqua Lake, 4 p.m.
- 1-Portville vs. 3-Maple Grove, 6:30 p.m.
The offense has been grooving for Cassadaga Valley with 23-1 and 8-1 wins in the playoffs so far. The Cougars take on Chautauqua Lake, which upset defending Class C sectional champ 1-Cleveland Hill with a 4-2 win on Tuesday.
Portville has scored 23 runs and hasn't had a run cross the plate against it so for this postseason. Maple Grove went 6-8 during the regular season but picked up 12-2 and 5-2 wins over Randolph and Silver Creek, respectively, on its way to today's final.
The overall Class C championship is Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. back at Prommenschenkel Park.
2. Softball - Class AA & D semifinals
Three of Thursday's four semifinal matchups were postponed to today.
- 5-Williamsville North vs. 1-Lancaster, 4:45 p.m. at Clarence
- 3-Niagara Wheatfield vs. 2-Orchard Park, 4:45 p.m. at D'Youville
- 4-Forestville at 1-Franklinville, 3 p.m.
Lancaster's undefeated 21-0 season includes 6-4 and 9-5 ECIC I wins over the Spartans. Orchard Park is the two-time defending Class AA champ, while Niagara Wheatfield is the last school not named the Orchard Park or Clarence to win a Class AA title. That happened back in 2011. The AA final is next Tuesday at Williamsville North at 4:30 p.m.
Franklinville (12-0) is also unbeaten in Class D and has yet to yield more than three runs in any game this season. Forestville is coming off of a 5-0 win over Clymer on Tuesday. The winner meets North Collins in next Tuesday's final at Prommenschenkel Park in Dunkirk at 4 p.m.
3. Baseball - Williamsville North vs. Lancaster, 5 p.m. at Clarence
The Class AA semifinal game between No. 1 Lancaster and No. 4 Williamsville North was rescheduled from yesterday.
The Legends haven't lost a game since their opener, a 3-2 game at Williamsville North on April 5. MLB Draft prospect LG Castillo has 27 hits, seven of which have gone for home runs.
The Spartans are led offensively by seniors Josh Surowiec, Kyle Spoth and Jake Zurat. Surowiec, who's also the ace on the pitching staff, has a team-high 31 hits, 25 RBIs, five triples and three homers.
No. 2 Clarence awaits in Saturday's 3 p.m. final at Niagara Falls High School. The Red Devils eliminated No. 3 Kenmore West yesterday, 9-2.
4. Baseball - Georgetown Cup quarterfinals
(UPDATE: St. Mary's vs. O'Hara has been postponed to Sunday, 6 p.m. at Northtown Center)
It's either win or go home for four Catholic baseball teams on Friday.
No. 2 St. Mary's of Lancaster hosts No. 7 Cardinal O'Hara, while No. 4 St. Joe's hosts No. 5 Bishop Timon-St. Jude. Both games start at 4:30 p.m.
The St. Mary's-O'Hara winner faces the winner of 6-Nichols at 3-St. Francis, which was postponed from Thursday to Saturday at 6 p.m.
The St. Joe's-Timon winner takes on No. 1 Canisius in the semifinals. Game one of the best-of-three series comes Tuesday.
The first game of the best-of-three Georgetown Cup finals at Coca-Cola Field is set for June 5.
5. Track & field - ECIC & CCAA Championships
A pair of two-day league track and field championships get underway today.
The ECIC Championships at Hamburg High School start at noon. The CCAA Championships at Dunkirk High School get a later 4 p.m. start.
The second day of the ECIC Championships start at 11 a.m, while the second day of the CCAA Championships start at 10 a.m.
Sectionals will be hosted by Jamestown High School on June 2 and 3 this year. Both days start at noon.
