The Erie County Water Authority is warning its customers about people impersonating water meter workers in Amherst.
The water authority encouraged customers to ask water meter workers for identification before giving them access to a home or business. Authority meter service workers drive blue-and-white vehicles with a water authority logo visible on both sides, wear a blue uniform with an authority emblem and always carry a photo ID badge.
Customers should confirm all three forms of identification from anyone claiming they are at a business or home to read or service a water meter, the authority said. If customers aren't shown proper ID, they should shut their doors and dial 911 or call the authority's customer service line at 849-8484.
The authority is aware of two incidents that took place Thursday and perhaps Wednesday, said Sean Dwyer, an authority spokesman. He said Amherst police are investigating and they could provide further information.
