The first chance for the public to watch Lockport's new replica canal boat go through the 19th-century Erie Canal locks comes Saturday.
The two restored locks in the Flight of Five, as the set of five original locks is known, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday through Sept. 30, the Locks Heritage District Corp. announced. Tours begin every half-hour on Canal Street, above the locks.
A team of volunteers worked all winter at the Buffalo Maritime Center building the 51.5-foot-long Erie Traveler. The boat, funded by a $30,000 grant from Yahoo, was delivered to Lockport May 11.
Rising water will move the boat from one lock to another, just as cargo boats did nearly 200 years ago, during a tour led by volunteer docents. The locks also are operated by volunteers.
