Homeroom Announcements: Wednesday's big games & more

What to watch for Wednesday

1. Baseball - Class A-1, A-2, B-1, B-2, C-1 & C-2 finals

The first six baseball champions of the season are set to be crowned on Wednesday. The Class A, B and C championships are Saturday at to-be-determined locations.

Class A-1
- 1-Wmsv. East vs. 2-Wmsv. South, 5 p.m. at Lew-Port
Class A-2
- 3-Olean vs. 5-Lew-Port, 5 p.m. at Niagara Falls

The Flames pulled out a wild 12-11 game against Hamburg on Monday. Eighth-grader Joe Mack had a grand slam, while Mike Steffan had two hits and three RBIs. The Billies shut out Grand Island, 5-0, behind a three-hitter from Elijah Zells. Adam Braniecki had a two-run home run and Ryan Hahn had two RBIs.

The Lancers took down top-seeded Starpoint, 3-2, on Monday. Ian Evans scattered three hits in a complete game on the mound. Dawson Bailey and Mat Carden each had an RBI. Olean blanked No. 2-seed Maryvale, 4-0.

Class B-1
- 2-Alden vs. 4-Depew, 7 p.m. at Gowanda
Class B-2
- 3-Fredonia vs. 4-Roy-Hart, 4 p.m. at Gowanda

Alden needed all of Justin Daucher's four RBIs, including a three-run homer, in its 11-8 win over CSAT on Monday. AJ Hammer threw a complete game three-hitter in Depew's 5-1 win over East Aurora. Dante DiRienzo and Zac Buck each had one RBI.

Both B-2 schools are coming off shutouts from Monday. Defending state runner-up Fredonia beat No. 2 Tonawanda, 4-0, while Roy-Hart blanked Southwestern, 3-0.

Class C-1
- 1-Silver Creek/Forestville vs. 2-Allegany-Limestone, 4 p.m. at Diethrick Park
Class C-2
- 1-Barker vs. 3-Maple Grove, 7 p.m. at Diethrick Park

This is the only class that had both No. 1 seeds make to to their respective finals. Barker's Ryan Voss gave up no earned runs pitching a complete game, scored three runs on offense and fell a single short of the cycle in a 6-3 win over Holland Monday. Silver Creek advanced with a 4-0 win over WNY Maritime.

As for their counterparts today, Allegany-Limestone ran away from Falconer, 11-0, and Maple Grove won a 1-0 game over Portville.

2. Softball - Monsignor Martin championship

St. Mary's of Lancaster and Mount Mercy battle it out for the Catholic title at 3 p.m. at Sunshine Park on Wednesday.

The Magic won the regular season meeting, 9-6, May 9. Chloe Manikowski went 2-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Mallory Ashe had a double and three RBIs.

Mount Mercy advanced by beating Sacred Heart yesterday, 6-2. Tina Zambron and Beth Hughes both went 2-3 at the plate. Zambron had a triple and two RBIs, while Beth Hughes added three RBIs.

The Lancers edged Mount St. Mary, 4-2, in the other semifinal on Monday.

3. Track & field - All-High & Niagara Frontier Championships

The second and final day of the All-High track meet starts at 4:30 p.m. at All-High Stadium on the Bennett High School campus. The Hutch-Tech boys and Olmsted girls won this year's regular season Scalp & Blade series titles. The Engineers won 16 of the 29 events at last year's meet.

The first of the two-day Niagara Frontier League Championships at Grand Island start a 4 p.m. Tomorrow's action is scheduled to start at the same time.
