Canisius senior Jake Lumley was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year at the conference baseball awards banquet Tuesday on the eve of the start of the MAAC playoffs at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls.
Lumley is having a career year in his final season for the Griffs with personal bests in batting average (.358) and doubles (11). He led the MAAC in hits with 77, which ranks 61st in the country. He averages 1.43 hits per game.
The Canisius shortstop also made the All-MAAC first team for the second year in a row as decided by the league coaches. Liam Wilson of the Griffs also was a first-team selection. Wilson batted .346, splitting time between designated hitter and third base.
Canisius defeated Rider, 11-8, Wednesday in its opening game of the MAAC Tournament at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls. The Griffs were scheduled to face Marist at noon today but the start has been pushed back to at least 4 p.m. Administrators are scheduled to meet at 11:30 this morning to determine the feasibility of playing today.
