The campaign for a new playground planned by the Boys and Girls Club of Elma, Marilla and Wales got a jump-start from another Southtowns organization.
The Butterfly Foundation has pledged $50,000 to the new $175,000 playground. The foundation, a nonprofit organization celebrating the life of Katie Durkin, just completed funding and coordinating the new Butterfly Athletic Park next to Wales Primary School, which will be dedicated June 17.
Foundation president Jeff Durkin said the $50,000 pledge was made possible by community members who provided financial gifts, labor and supplies that caused the Butterfly Athletic Park to be completed under budget.
The Boys and Girls Club wants to construct a playground at the club at 2080 Girdle Road. It would be the first significant improvement since the 8,000 square-foot building was built 20 years ago.
“Our boys and girls need additional play area and our membership is booming,” said Executive Director Tracey Karp-Theal.
