Adele Givens among comedy shows to check out Memorial Day weekend

Ready to get your laugh on? There are several comedy options for you this weekend.

• Former “Def Comedy Jam” and “Queens of Comedy” star Adele Givens headlines a weekend of shows at Helium Comedy Club (30 Mississippi). A Chicago native, Givens quickly won a comedy contest in the Windy City and went on to be featured in HBO’s long-running “Def Comedy Jam” series. She also earned roles in films like “Beauty Shop” and “The Players Club.” Givens will perform five shows at Helium: 7:30 and 10 p.m. May 26-27 and 7 p.m. May 28. Tickets are $25. Info at

• Looking for a comedy show where anything can happen? Check out ComedySportz Buffalo, the improv comedy group that builds its shows around audience suggestions. Ticket prices are always affordable, ranging from $12 to $5. The group offers a number of shows: Minor League at 7 p.m. May 25, regular ComedySportz shows at 7:30 p.m. May 26 and 27, and the after-hours show “Seven Minutes in Heaven” at 9:30 p.m. May 27. • The regular local comedy showcase, “Laugh and Other Drugs,” has a new host with Kevin Thomas Jr., winner of last year’s “Buffalo’s Funniest Person” contest. The next show is 8 p.m. May 25 in the 9th Ward at Babeville (341 Delaware Ave.) and features Tony Pusateri of Mix 96, Suzanne Taylor, Jay Falk, JJ Billingsly, Ryan Henry and Bryan Meyers.
