Man, 20, sentenced in Cattaraugus County fatal crash

A Cattaraugus County man was sentenced on Monday to an indeterminate term of 5 to 15 years in state prison for his conviction in a fatal crash a year ago in Red House, according to the Cattaraugus County District Attorney's Office.

Cyrus N. Spruce, 20, of Little Valley, had been convicted of second-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault for his role in the fatal crash, which took place between May 21 and May 22 of last year, on Old State Route 17 in Red House, according to officials.

Spruce was accused of speeding and driving recklessly on part of Old Route 17 and striking two parked cars and a pedestrian standing alongside one of the vehicles, according to officials.

Instead of stopping to assist the victim, 23-year-old Watson M. Cooper of Salamanca, Cattaraugus County Sheriff's deputies said Spruce fled the scene of the accident, officials said.

Watson was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, officials said.
