Bills on Amherst parkland swap introduced in State Legislature

A proposed parkland swap that would allow the Town of Amherst to pursue development of a hotel at the Northtown Center is in the hands of state lawmakers.

Bills were introduced last week in the Assembly and State Senate that would remove the parkland designation from 3 acres at the town-owned ice rink complex on Amherst Manor Road and transfer it to a 26.6-acre parcel of wooded, town-owned land between North French Road and Casey Road in the East Amherst Conservation Area.

The process, known as "alienation," is a necessary first step for a proposal by Uniland Development Co. to develop an $11 million Hampton by Hilton hotel at the Northtown Center. A four-story hotel of 105 rooms and 115 parking spots is envisioned.

The bills were referred to the Assembly and State Senate's committees on local governments.
