NCCC headed for baseball nationals

Casey Gruarin (Niagara Wheatfield) homered among his three hits and Matt Cross (Starpoint) also hit one as Niagara County Community College advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III World series with an 18-8 triumph over Hudson Valley CC at Colburn Park in Newark.

The win in the championship game of the NJCAA Region III playoffs was the eight win in a row for coach Matt Clingersmith’s Thunderwolves (43-8). It will be NCCC’s fifth trip to the nationals under Clingersmith.

Ryan Green pitched 5.1 innings in relief, allowing four hits and striking out five to pick up the win for NCCC.

The NJCAA World Series will get underway on Saturday at Pioneer Park in Greeneville, Tenn.
