May 17 WNY Driver of the Week: Mike Janis

Division: Pro Mods/NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series

Lowdown: Mike Janis is a veteran drag racer of over 40 years who cut his teeth in old Super Modified drag racing class at Lancaster National Speedway and Dragway in 1978. Following his local drag racing days, Janis graduated to the regional and national stages of the sport in both the NHRA and IHRA. This season Janis is concentrating on the 12-race NHRA Pro Mod Drag Series schedule. Janis has been racing Pro Mods full time since 2001.

Accomplishments: Janis won a pair of Quick 8 championships at Toronto Motorsports Park in 1989 and 1990.  Janis claimed IHRA Pro Mod World Championships in 2001 and 2004. Finished second in NHRA Pro Mod standings in 2015, just 14 points out of the top spot. Janis has been victorious four times in NHRA national events, including Englishtown, NJ., Norwalk, Ohio, Houston and the 2013 U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis.

Favorite Food: A salad and a veggie burger.

Favorite Music: "All Beatles.

Hobbies: Spending time with grandchildren, including 8-year-old grandson Jacob Janis, who will begin his Junior Dragster racing career this summer at Lancaster.
