Homeroom Announcements: Monday's big games & more

Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Monday

1. Baseball - St. Mary's of Lancaster at St. Francis, 4:30 p.m.

No. 2 large school St. Francis (9-4, 6-0) looks to stay undefeated against Western New York competition when they host No. 5 small school St. Mary's (11-2, 5-2) in a key Monsignor Martin Association battle.

The Red Raiders are the last undefeated in the division, but they have a gauntlet of a schedule this week: St. Mary's today, Clarence Tuesday, Canisius Wednesday, Bishop Timon-St. Jude Thursday, Canisius again Friday and St. Joe's Sunday. St. Francis has outscored St. Mary's and Orchard Park 19-9 its past two wins.

The Lancers were on a seven-game winning streak heading into last Thursday's loss to St. Francis. Their only other hiccup came against Canisius. But St. Mary's has two wins over the Crusaders (one nonleague) and others over Albion, Roy-Hart, V-Aquinas and St. Joe's.

2. Boys lacrosse - Hamburg at Orchard Park, 5 p.m.

Orchard Park and Hamburg hadn't met for more than a decade before renewing acquaintances on April 22, a 10-7 Quakers win. Today these lacrosse powerhouses meet for the second time this season.

The Bulldogs (11-4) remained undefeated in Class B on Thursday with a narrow 12-11 win at Niagara Wheatfield. Seniors Jason Chiodo (33 goals, 23 assists) and Gage Schneider (32 goals, eight assists) lead the team offensively.

The Quakers (11-3) suffered a rare local loss last Tuesday in a 9-8 Class A loss at Clarence. The trio of Logan Collins (34 goals, 24 assists), Coleman Jacobs (44 goals, 12 assists) and Pat Sullivan (34 goals, 22 assists) lead this high-scoring crew.

3. Softball - Williamsville North at Williamsville East, 4:15 p.m.

No. 3 large school Williamsville East (12-2) already swept Williamsville South in two matchups this season. Now the Flames will go for the "district sweep" against No. 5 large school Williamsville North (11-6-1).

East has won four games in a row since a loss to West Seneca East, its second of the season to the Trojans. Sophomores Christy Mack and Rachel Steffan are two of the top players on the Flames, who finish up their season tomorrow against another top large school in No. 4 Niagara Wheatfield.

All six of the Spartans' losses came in ECIC I, arguably the toughest division in Western New York. Outside the division, North has two wins over No. 1 small school Depew. Sophomores Anna Brand and Abby Vincent have been standouts this season.

4. Baseball - Canisius at St. Joe's, 4:30 p.m.

No. 5 large school Canisius (8-5, 5-1) and No. 8 large school St. Joe's (8-7, 3-4) meet for the second time in five days after the Crusaders pulled out an 8-7 home win last Thursday.

Canisius rallied from an early 6-3 deficit by scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead. Starting pitcher Mitch Rosati left the game in the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, but Jake Podlas earned the save by forcing two ground outs to preserve the win.

The Marauders have lost four of their last five games, so they'll be looking to gather some momentum heading into the playoffs. Joe's hosts St. Mary's Saturday and St. Francis Sunday to close out the regular season.

5. Girls lacrosse - Frontier at West Seneca East, 5 p.m.

Frontier (13-0), the last unbeaten girls lacrosse team in Western New York, visits a strong West Seneca East (12-2) team in the top girls lacrosse game of the day.

The Falcons are coming off of a four-win week against Clarence, Lockport, Orchard Park and Villa Maria (Pa.) in four consecutive days. Junior Haylee Tatar and senior Hannah Kennedy lead the team in points this season.

The Trojans have their own impressive offensive duo in seniors Laura Skrzypczyk and Grace Vogel. East needed all eight of Vogel's goals on Saturday to pick up a 17-16 victory over crosstown rival West Seneca West.
