Olean man faces murder charge after woman's body is found

Edward J. Smith Jr.

OLEAN – An Olean man was charged with second-degree murder Saturday morning after police found the body of a dead woman in his apartment, Olean Police Capt. Robert Blovsky said.

Edward J. Smith Jr., 50, lived in apartment 331 of the Olean House, a historic hotel that is now a 62-unit federally subsidized apartment house at 132 N. Union St. In addition to the murder charge, he faces charges of first-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

In a statement, Blovsky said Olean police received a call about 6:40 a.m. Saturday reporting a possible murder in the apartment. Smith answered the door for police, who entered and found the dead woman.

After his arrest, Smith was held overnight in Olean General Hospital. He was released from the hospital Sunday morning, booked at the police station and arraigned in Olean City Court. Smith was transferred to Cattaraugus County Jail and will appear in Olean City Court Tuesday for a preliminary hearing.
