Buffalo man sentenced to 3 1/2 years for bringing loaded gun to school

A Buffalo man who brought a loaded handgun onto the grounds of the Baker Hall School in Lackawanna in January will spend 3 1/2 years in prison, in addition to five years post-release supervision.

Devonte Ridgeway, 20, was sentenced Friday by Erie County Court Judge Michael Pietruszka.

Ridgeway previously pleaded guilty to second degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was accused of bringing a loaded handgun concealed in a backpack onto the school grounds. School staff searched his backpack after a metal detector alarm was triggered and found a loaded .22-caliber handgun tucked inside a sneaker in the backpack.

Ridgeway fled the school but was later apprehended later by Lackawanna Police in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Pietruszka also issued an order of protection preventing Ridgeway from having any contact with employees of the school until July 28, 2028.
