Lewiston man charged after vehicle door hits 5-year-old girl in driveway

A Lewiston man was arrested Thursday by State Police after he allegedly backed his vehicle in a way that struck a 5-year-old girl, hitting her with the door, authorities said.

James Printup, 49, pulled into a driveway shortly after 4 p.m., when the 5-year-old exited his vehicle from the passenger side, according to State Police.

Printup then put the vehicle in reverse and backed up, according to authorities. In the process, the girl was struck by an open door of the vehicle, which caused abrasions to her head and leg, State Police said.

Mercy Flight airlifted the child to Women & Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Printup was charged by State Police under Leandra's Law and with driving while ability impaired, according to authorities. Printup was also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, authorities said.

Troopers said Printup failed a sobriety field test administered at the scene and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital for a blood sample. Printup was transported to State Police barracks and issued appearance tickets for Lewiston Town Court.
