It was a beautiful morning for a bicycle ride, and that's what Gowanda Superintendent James Klubek and about two dozen students did on national Ride to School Day Wednesday.
"It was a little chilly, I think it was 44 in my truck," he said of the 6:45 a.m. ride.
Students, some parents, members of the Healthy Community Alliance, police, Middle School Principal Todd Miklas and Klubek biked from the Healthy Community Alliance Center on School Street to the Middle School on Prospect Street. The alliance provided T-shirts, water bottles and helmets, Klubek said. Most dressed for the occasion, but the superintendent wore khakis, dress shirt and shoes, he said.
And when school ended, he rode his mountain bike from his office back to the center to pick up his truck.
"I think we want to expand things like this," he said, adding the school, alliance and village are working to promote a walkable community.
