Brothers of Mercy to begin construction on Clarence rehab center expansion

The Brothers of Mercy plan to begin construction this week on a $650,000 outpatient rehabilitation clinic at its Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Clarence.

The 2,400-square-foot expansion on Bergtold Road received a boost last year from a $300,000 donation from Russell J. Salvatore. That allowed the Brothers of Mercy to revive a clinic that was proposed but never built several years ago.

The expansion will serve patients who receive inpatient rehab at the center and who sought to return for outpatient services. The Brothers of Mercy received an updated certificate of need from the state Health Department for the project.

Work on the project was to begin as early as Monday and is set to finish by fall. The Brothers of Mercy had received a $48,500 Oishei Foundation grant and worked with other foundations to raise the rest of the money for the clinic.

The cost includes furniture and equipment purchased for the clinic, and some of the 2,400 square feet will allow for future general expansion of the center.
