Driver who knocked out power in Orchard Park uninjured but arrested

A 26-year-old Town of Boston woman faces numerous charges after Orchard Park police say she drove off the road, over a guardrail and two mailboxes, through a traffic sign and into a ditch before knocking down a utility pole Saturday in Orchard Park.

Officers said Ashley McNamara was uninjured in the crash that left nearby homes without power Saturday afternoon. Damages and repairs to the pole and power lines alone are expected to exceed $6,000.

Orchard Park police responded shortly after 2:30 p.m. to a report that a 2011 Chevy pickup had struck a utility pole along South Abbott Road between Newton Road and the Route 219 overpass. Officers found the pole severed and power lines lying across the roadway.

McNamara was given field sobriety tests. She was arrested for driving while intoxicated, driving at an imprudent speed, refusing to submit to a roadside screening test and other traffic violations.

South Abbott was shut down while New York State Electric and Gas crews replaced the pole. Police were filing an additional charge of criminal mischief.
