A Buffalo startup that makes comfort pads for breastfeeding moms has teamed up with one of the biggest names in baby products.
Rachel's Remedies LLC, which is headquartered on Parkside Avenue, has signed a licensing agreement with Dr. Brown's, a global maker of baby bottles and other baby feeding products.
Under the agreement, Rachel's will continue to manufacture the pads in Orchard Park, while Dr. Brown's takes care of all the distribution, marketing and promotion. The moist-heat breastfeeding pads will be co-branded Dr. Brown's Rachel's Remedy Breastfeeding Relief Packs.
Dr. Brown's sells its products in 60 countries and at all major U.S. retailers. It makes up 25 percent of the baby bottle market.
"That's a huge benefit for us," said Rachel Jackson, founder of Rachel's Remedies. "Our reach is now automatically worldwide."
Rachel's Remedy is already sold at major retailers such as Babies R Us and Target. It is an FDA-approved moist-heat pad that soothes common breastfeeding ailments such as clogged ducts and engorgement, and helps to increase milk supply.
The company has a total of three employees, including Jackson and her husband, director of operations Angelo Caico. It also has six independent contractors.
It was the first company to receive seed money from venture development organization Launch NY. Jackson said the help from Launch NY, as well as that from startup incubator Z80 Labs, was a crucial factor in the success of Rachel's Remedy.
"Without that entrepreneurial community and support system, it would've taken us a lot longer to get where we are," Jackson said. "They've been incredible."
