Letter: Maybe Statue of Liberty needs to be dismantled

Maybe Statue of Liberty needs to be dismantled

Well, we are beginning to see what the election deposited on our shore. I have no illusions as to how bad it will get because I watched and listened very carefully during the campaign. I shudder at the potential for disaster. I hope all the people who voted for President Trump and his coterie are paying close attention. If what they wanted was the destruction of a social structure that has taken over 200 years to forge, then they are about to get their wish.

Once more we have a perfect example of people voting against their own interest. When will we learn? The old maxim still applies: There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

There are many in the country who are disaffected and angry and want to strike back at a government they feel is to blame. The funny but sad thing is that they shot down the wrong offender. They keep returning the same culprits to Congress. The millionaire legislators have theirs (including a gilt-edged health plan); they could not care less about you and me.

The French thought so highly of us that they gifted us with the Statue of Liberty, an emblem of the generosity of our spirit. If we continue on the path that we are on, perhaps we should dismantle our “Lady in the Harbor” and store her until we come to our senses.
