Letter: County should ban conversion therapy

County should ban conversion therapy

I am writing in regard to The News article regarding legislation to ban conversion therapy for minors. I almost fell off my chair when I read that Erie County Legislator Ted Morton, R-Cheektowaga, seemed to feel that religious people should be allowed to practice this form of soul-killing torture. It gives the term “religious persecution” a whole new meaning. I can only pray that the insights provided in The News gave him better clarity on this.

As someone who grew up gay in Cheektowaga and was constantly tormented by the parochial atmosphere here to the point of being self-destructive on so many levels (even to some degree now in my 60s) despite numerous rounds of therapy, I beg Morton to have a heart.
