11 pounds of pot found hidden in spare tire at Rainbow Bridge stop

More than 11 pounds of marijuana was found hidden inside the spare tire of a vehicle at the Rainbow Bridge Tuesday, leading to the arrest of the driver, a 31-year-old Canadian citizen from Niagara Falls, Ont., U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.

Daniel Hancock was trying to enter the United States via the Rainbow Bridge when border protection officers became suspicious during an initial inspection of the vehicle and referred the vehicle for a secondary inspection.

During a search, the officers found 11.48 pounds of pot – worth about $28,700 – hidden inside a spare tire of the vehicle.

Hancock was arrested and the drugs were seized. The Niagara Falls Police Department took Hancock into custody, along with the illegal narcotics.

“CBP officers are trained to identify indicators warranting further inspection of individuals arriving at the U.S. border,” said Acting Port Director Cary Frieling.
