Rainout prompts Bisons, Rochester to set double-header Wednesday

Two of the best pitching staffs in the International League will be well-rested when they hit the Coca Cola Field diamond Wednesday.

Buffalo and Rochester were rained out Tuesday. Both teams were off Monday. The Bisons and Red Wings are scheduled to play a double-header starting at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. Both games are seven innings. The weather forecast looks promising, with partly sunny skies and temperatures of 55 degrees.

Buffalo leads the IL in team earned-run average, at 2.82, and saves, with 10. Bisons pitchers have given up the third fewest walks, 63 in 22 games. Rochester stands third in ERA at 3.08. Red Wings pitchers have allowed the fewest walks, 51 in 21 games.

The Bisons stand first in the IL’s North Division at 14-8. Rochester, the affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, stands second at 12-9.

Pitchers: The scheduled pitching matchup in Game One is Buffalo’s Josh Grube (2-1, 4.05) against Rochester’s David Hurlbut (1-2, 1.02). The 35-year-old Grube has spent time at the Triple-A level for the past nine seasons. Hurlbut is a 27-year-old left-hander who is in Rochester for a third straight season. In the nightcap, it's Buffalo's Casey Lawrence (0-0, 1.80) against Nik Turley (0-0, 0.00). Lawrence, 29, was Buffalo's comeback player of the year last season. Turley, 27, struck out 14 last week in a game for Chattanooga.

Admission: Fans can attend both Wednesday games with one ticket. Tickets to Tuesday’s game can be exchanged for a comparable ticket to any game this season.

Top hitter: Buffalo outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. is tied for third in batting with a .338 average.

Promotion: Wednesday is National Ice Cream Day. Chocolate ice cream will sell for $1.

Up next: After Wednesday evening’s scheduled game, the two teams are scheduled to play at 1:05 p.m. Thursday. Then Lehigh Valley comes to town for a three-game series, with games at 7:05 p.m. Friday and 1:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
