A Cheektowaga police officer suffered a concussion and a bite to his hand last month when youths attacked him while he was breaking up a fight among teenage girls in the Walden Galleria, town police reported Tuesday.
A shopper approached the officer in the mall April 8 and reported two girls were about to fight, Cheektowaga police said.
When the officer got there, the two 16-year-old girls already were punching each other. The officer ordered the pair to break it up, but they continued fighting, police said.
When the officer stepped in between the girls, "several other youths with the girls attacked him from behind," police said in a news release.
One of the attackers bit the officer on the hand, breaking skin and causing bleeding.
Another youth kicked the officer while a third hit him over the head with what was described by police as "a heavy object."
The two 16-year-olds were charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. The officer is now out of work and being treated for a concussion and the bite, which became infected.
Assistant Police Chief James Speyer declined to identify the officer.
Police ask anyone with information about the identity of the other youths to call the department at 686-3505.
