Eichel, O'Reilly earn top-line roles at world championships

Jack Eichel and Ryan O’Reilly are at the top of the depth chart for their respective countries.

The United States and Canada are playing exhibition games Tuesday in preparation for this month’s world championships. The Americans are facing Italy in Milan, while the Canadians are visiting Switzerland in Geneva.

Eichel is the No. 1 center for the United States, skating between left wing Anders Lee of the New York Islanders and right wing Johnny Gaudreau of Calgary. Sabres goaltending prospect Cal Petersen is not dressed for the Americans, who are using Detroit’s Jimmy Howard and Winnipeg’s Connor Hellebuyck as their goalies.

As is often the case when O’Reilly plays for Canada, he has shifted from center to wing. He is the top right winger, skating with center Mark Scheifele of Winnipeg and left wing Jeff Skinner of Carolina.

The world championships start Friday and conclude May 21.
