Democrats to consider successor to Grant at Wednesday meeting

Democrats in the County Legislature’s District 2 will consider at least three candidates to run for the seat being vacated by mayoral candidate Betty Jean Grant during a Wednesday meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Martha Mitchell Community Center on Oakwood Avenue.

Erie County Democratic Chairman Jeremy J. Zellner said other potential candidates are invited, too. But he said he expects former At-Large Council Member Charley H. Fisher III;  Duncan Kirkwood, Western New York advocacy manager for the Northeast Charter Schools Network;  and James Blackwell to vie for the endorsement.

Zellner said he is impressed by Blackwell, 23, a professional golfer and son of former Legislature Chairman Roger I. Blackwell.

“He has public service pumping through his blood and represents a new generation of leadership,” Zellner said.
