What to watch for Friday
1. Softball - Orchard Park at Clarence, 5 p.m.
No. 1 large school Orchard Park (6-0, 4-0) visits ECIC I foe and No. 3 large school Clarence (5-2, 3-2) in the top game on Friday's schedule.
The Quakers beat Williamsville North yesterday, 4-2, to stay undefeated on the year. Sophomore Elizabeth Lis picked up the win in the circle, while senior Alex Sheehy had one hit and two RBIs.
The Red Devils started the week with a 2-1 win over North but have lost a pair of tough 4-3 league games the past two days to Lancaster and Frontier. Seniors Hannah Marlowe and Emily Schmitt are two of the top offensive players for Clarence.
2. Baseball - Orchard Park at Clarence, 4:45 p.m.
One team will rebound from a loss to Lancaster when No. 2 large school Clarence (8-1, 6-1) hosts No. 6 large school Orchard Park (4-2, 3-2) on Friday.
The Quakers were shut out by the Legends in a rain-shortened 4-0 game yesterday. Senior Cole Hollins is batting .476 with 10 hits (five doubles, triple) and 13 RBIs through six games this season. Jordan Lewis leads the team with 11 hits, while Troy Banks leads the team with 11 runs.
The Red Devils were off yesterday but suffered their first loss of the season to Lancaster on Wednesday, 5-1. Clarence started the week with a 9-3 win over current No. 1 Williamsville North on Monday. Tyler White went 4-4 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs. Nick Ciraolo threw a complete game five-hitter to earn the win.
3. Girls lacrosse - Frontier at Lancaster, 5 p.m.
Lancaster and Frontier have met in the Class A championship game the past six years, with the Legends winning the last five. The two division rivals face off for the first time this season on Friday.
The Legends (6-1, 2-1) rebounded from a 7-6 league loss to Orchard Park last Friday by winning back-to-back games this week over West Seneca East and Lockport. Five players have at least 10 goals for Lancaster, which averages 14 goals per game. Senior Alyssa Markowski leads the team with 23 points (16 goals). Sophomore Jordan Rokitka is one point behind with 22 (17 goals).
The Falcons (6-0, 3-0), meanwhile, had no trouble with Orchard Park in an 18-5 win on Wednesday. Hannah Kennendy scored five times to push her team-leading goal total to 25. The trio of juniors Haylee Tatar, Katie Dlugosz and Taylor Gehen also play a big role in an offense averaging 15 goals per game.
4. Softball - Amherst at Williamsville East, 4:45 p.m.
No. 7 Amherst (4-3, 3-2) heads to No. 5 Williamsville East (6-1, 4-1) for an ECIC II showdown between top large schools.
The Tigers picked up a 9-1 win over Iroquois yesterday. Junior Caroline Seaner threw a complete game three-hitter for the win. Offensively, junior Mia Ciccarella had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs.
The Flames have won four in a row since losing their lone game of the year to West Seneca East last Friday, 4-3. Rachel Steffan hit the game-winning RBI single in a 6-5 win over rival Williamsville South on Monday, while pitchers Jess Weaver and Cara Leone combined for a one-hitter in a 16-0 shutout of Sweet Home on Wednesday.
5. Girls lacrosse - West Seneca West at Hamburg, 7 p.m.
Class B unbeatens Hamburg (4-3, 3-0) and West Seneca West (5-0, 2-0) face off under the lights to round out today's top attractions.
The Bulldogs, the five-time defending Class B champs, have won three consecutive league games against Niagara Wheatfield and Williamsville North twice. Seniors Meagan Maxwell and Addy Wright and junior Emma O'Neil lead the team in points.
The Indians are undefeated overall and have league wins over Williamsville North and North Tonawanda. At least five players have 10 or more points for West, which is led offensively by seniors Paige Cocina and Claire Purdy, among others.
