A sixth-grade student at Iroquois Intermediate/Middle School suffered a critical head injury late Wednesday afternoon when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding overturned and pinned him, Erie County sheriff's officials reported.
The incident occurred just before 5:30 p.m. in an area about a mile off the road near the intersection of Townline Road and Clinton Street in Elma, according to sheriff's Chief John Greenan.
The victim was identified as 11-year-old Zack Matla.
Greenan said Zack was apparently attempting to scale a hill on the ATV when it rolled over on top of him.
"He had a severe head injury," Greenan said. "He was wearing a helmet."
Zack was treated by the Marilla Fire Company and taken by Mercy Flight to Women & Children's Hospital and spent the night in surgery.
Sheriffs officials said Zack was listed in critical condition this morning.
