Three weeks ago in this space, I wrote that a vibe around One Bills Drive indicated General Manager Doug Whaley would not be fired right after the NFL Draft and could be safe through the 2017 season.
That, however, was before the Pegulas jolted the Sabres a week ago, abruptly firing General Manager Tim Murray and coach Dan Bylsma.
Now, everyone is on red alert.
A ProFootballTalk.com report Wednesday quoted an unnamed Bills scout as saying, "We are all getting fired next week."
McDermott's orderly demeanor, especially when juxtaposed with Rex Ryan's frat-house environment, has made a growing impression on the Pegulas as they're exposed to how he operates.
McDermott seems to have a vision other Bills and Sabres decisions-makers haven't exhibited. Each organization has been winging it, but maybe those days finally are nearing an end.
Retaining Whaley and his scouts, many of whom pre-date predecessor Buddy Nix, will help the Bills get through the draft, which runs through Saturday. Then it will be time for McDermott to install evaluators he trusts.
The Pegulas showed last week they're out of patience. Might as well do it now.
