Letter: Central Terminal support is about more than ‘nostalgia’

Central Terminal support is about more than ‘nostalgia’

I am sick and tired of hearing that those who support the Central Terminal site are doing so based on “nostalgia.” What an ignorant reason for giving opposition! Renewal and growth at Canalside, the Outer Harbor and downtown are great, but parking is a nightmare and Buffalo encompasses more than just that downtown area.

The Central Terminal is the best location for many reasons, most significantly the ability to switch tracks. This would bring in more tourists and give locals easier and more direct train destinations, so it’s also likely to positively impact Amtrak. It’s the affordable choice due to availability of state and federal funding. Add in the Canadian developer who wants to expand the site for other uses. There is also plenty of space for parking, an intermodal transportation hub and even rapid transit.

It would give new life and jobs to the neglected East Side, where people flock in record numbers to the Broadway Market during holidays and for events at the terminal such as Dyngus Day. Security is an issue anywhere.

The Central Terminal is a landmark of this community, just like the Statue of Liberty or the Gateway Arch. Anyone who loves Buffalo can see that this beacon shouts out all that Buffalo was, is and can be. Common sense is not nostalgia!
