Police ID man killed in construction accident in Lewiston

LEWISTON – The man who was killed in a construction accident Tuesday at St.Peter's Roman Catholic Church and School was identified today as Timothy Zayac, 56, of Lockport.

Lewiston Police said Zayac, an employee of B&T Construction in Niagara Falls, died after he became trapped on a construction lift at 140 N. Sixth St. in the village of Lewiston.

The victim was operating the lift in the eaves of the building shortly before 2 p.m. when he became pinned between the lift and the building, Lewiston police said. Firefighters were working to free the man when he lost consciousness and stopped breathing, police added. Responders administered CPR but the man was declared dead at the scene.

Chief Frank Previte said Zayac was working on the exterior of the buildings, where the church and school connect.

"The preliminary investigation indicates that this was accidental, however the investigation is ongoing," police said in a news release. "There are no charges pending at this time."

Lewiston Fire No. 1 and Upper Mountain Fire companies and Mercy Flight responded to the emergency.
