Drew Lynch turns tragedy into comedy

Comedian Drew Lynch may have not always wanted a career telling jokes, but the “American’s Got Talent” standout recovered from a life-changing injury and embraced his new passion as he comes to Helium Comedy Club for five shows from April 20 to 22.

A native of Indianapolis, Lynch originally moved to Los Angeles when he was 19 to become an actor. Life had other plans for Lynch, as a softball accident left him with a severe stutter and pathway to another career. Not deterred by his setback, Lynch focused on his writing and began performing stand-up to gain experience before his run on “America’s Got Talent,” where he was named the first runner-up of the 10th season in 2015.

Lynch’s success on the stand-up stage has even reopened the door to acting, as he landed a regular role on Marc Maron’s IFC show, “Maron.” He also is a popular contributor on YouTube, as his videos with his service dog Stella have been viewed millions of times.

The comedian performs at 8 p.m. April 20 and 7:30 and 10 p.m. April 21 and 22 at Helium (30 Mississippi St.). Tickets range from $15 to $24. Visit
