What to watch for Thursday
1. Baseball - Eden at Gowanda, 11 a.m.
Eden (1-0) visits Gowanda (1-2) in a nonleague game between Class B-2 foes.
The Raiders topped Alden, 14-6, in their lone game of the season so far. Sawyer Overhoff, who was honorable mention All Western New York last season, had three doubles and three RBIs.
The Panthers have their win over Frontier and losses to top schools Orchard Park and Fredonia. Top player Matt Kruszka was one of three non-seniors on the All-Western New York first team last season.
2. Baseball - Depew at Alden, 4:30 p.m.
Alden (1-1) hosts Depew (1-0) in an ECIC III matchup on Thursday.
The Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season yesterday with a 16-2 drubbing of JFK. Winning pitcher Nate Reger had 10 Ks, while Tom Bednarski had three RBIs and Evan Kerl had two RBIs at the plate.
The Wildcats haven't played since an 11-2 win over Nichols last week. Sophomore Zack Buck went 2-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs to lead the way offensively. AJ Hammer threw six inning of one-hit ball to earn the win on the mound.
3. Softball - Grand Island at Nichols, 4:30 p.m.
The top softball game of the day features Nichols (1-0) and Grand Island (0-1)
The Vikings won their season opener yesterday, 13-1, against North Tonawanda. Megan Kyte struck out 15 batters, and Jill Boltz went 2-3 with two RBIs.
The Vikings lost to Clarence, 3-2, at the end of March. Nikki Castiglione's double was one of the team's four hits that game. Emma Richard pitched four innings, giving up two hits while striking out four, and also scored one of the team's two runs.
