Cutting four sports at UB is shameful
I have been a Western New Yorker and a University at Buffalo supporter for my entire 39 years. My family and I enjoy attending football and basketball games, and we cheer true blue. Today, however, I am ashamed to call myself a UB fan. The cuts made to four athletic teams were like a knife through my heart. I have no real investment in any of these teams, other than they are a part of UB life, of my community. The heartache this has caused these student athletes, their families and their coaches is absolutely abhorrent.
As an educator for 18 years, I can honestly say I recognize and understand the financial constraints that New York State has put on all educational institutions. That said, the devastating ramifications should never come at the expense of the students or of the coaches who have dedicated their time, energy and heart to making the athletic program great. Find another way. Charge an entrance fee. I will attend every game, every meet. These people, and even more, this growing community of Western New York, deserve the opportunity to show the world a first-class university and what it means to be a UB Bull.
