What to watch for Wednesday

1. Baseball - Lancaster at Williamsville North, 4:15 p.m.

Defending sectional champ Lancaster (0-0) returns six starters and should be one of the top Class AA teams in the state this year. First team All-Western New Yorker and Oklahoma commit LG Castillo is one of the top players in the state. All-WNY second teamers Max Giordano, Domenic Monti and Collin Reformat are also back from last season's 21-3 squad.

Williamsville North (1-0) topped crosstown rival Williamsville East on Monday, 3-2. Anthony Demaria went six innings to pick up the win on the mound, while David Harwell earned the save. Josh Suroweic had the game-winning single for the Spartans, who were eliminated by the Legends, 4-2, in the Class AA semifinals last year.

2. Softball - Barker at Roy-Hart, 4:45 p.m.

Roy-Hart (0-1) fell to top-seeded Fredonia in the Class B-2 semis last season with an extremely young lineup. Among the players returning from last year's 13-7 team are honorable mention All-WNY Small Schools member Kayla Brown, first team N-O catcher Maddie Fry, second teamer Maddy Glena and honorable mention selections Lexie Lovewell, Samantha Choate and Jamie Bower.

Barker (0-0) picked up three of its seven wins last year in the Class C playoffs as a 10 seed. It upset the Nos. 7, 2 and 6 seeds before its Cinderella run ended with a 2-0 loss to fourth-seeded Cleveland Hill in the final. The Red Raiders graduated honorable mention All-WNY Small Schools member Erika Moeller, but return Niagara-Orleans League honorable mention selections Abby Bachman, Sabrina Harris and Kylie Miller.

3. Girls lacrosse - Niagara Wheatfield at West Seneca East, 7 p.m.

Niagara Wheatfield and West Seneca East, both 1-0, look to remain unbeaten on the young season when the teams face off under the lights.

Grace Vogel scored five goals and Laura Skrzypczyk added four for the Trojans in their impressive season-opening 11-8 win over five-time defending Class B champion Hamburg last Wednesday.  The Falcons edged out Iroquois in overtime on Monday, 11-10. Ariana Smith finished the game with two goals, including the game winner, and two assists. Emily Ellis added three goals for Wheatfield.

4. Boys lacrosse - Grand Island at East Aurora, 5 p.m.

Grand Island (2-0) and East Aurora (0-1) battle in the first Class C game of the season on Wednesday.

The Vikings own an 18-2 win over North Tonawanda and a 9-7 win over West Seneca West, while the Blue Devils lost to V-Greece Odyssey/Athena, 11-6, on Saturday.

East Aurora went 13-5 overall last season and finished third in Class C with an 11-5 record against the division. Grand Island also went 13-5 overall and finished fifth in Class B with a 9-5 record.
