The Catholic Mass Saturday evening in the Erie County Holding Center had a special celebrant – the Most Rev. Richard J. Malone, bishop of Buffalo.
Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reported Sunday that the bishop also spoke with inmates and offered counseling after the Mass. It was the first time in recent years that a Catholic bishop has led a worship service in the Holding Center, he said.
It was not Bishop Malone’s first devotional visit inside prison walls, however. Last April he offered a Mass for female inmates in Albion State Correctional Facility.
Howard added that inmates at the Holding Center will have another guest celebrant for Easter Mass on April 16 – the Rev. Ryszard Biernat, secretary to Bishop Malone since 2013.
