Ronald L. Savage, a retired union carpenter and former Alden Town Board member, died Sunday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital in Amherst after a short illness. He was 88.
Born on the family homestead in Alden, he was third oldest of 11 children and attended Alden Central High School.
Mr. Savage worked for 41 years as a union carpenter and at the Alden State Correctional Facility, retiring in 1989.
He served for 16 years on the Alden Town Board in the 1970s and 1980s. His son, Richard A. “Rick,” is current Alden supervisor.
Active in the Alden Presbyterian Church, he served as a deacon and an elder and assisted in church maintenance. He also was president of the church’s Couples Club. He moved to Akron about eight years ago.
In addition to his son, survivors include his wife of 68 years, the former Violet Anne Phillips; two daughters, Dixie Lee Lilleck and Brenda Lynn Downs; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Alden Presbyterian Church, 13298 Broadway, Alden.
