Homeroom Announcements: Wednesday's big games & more

Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Wednesday

1. Girls lacrosse - West Seneca East at Hamburg, 7:30 p.m.

Five-time reigning sectional champ Hamburg (1-0) beat West Seneca East (0-0) in the Class B final the past two seasons. With the addition of a Class D this year, the teams are now in separate divisions.

The Trojans dropped down to Class C this year and return 90-goal scorer Laura Skrzypczyk and 60-goal scorer Grace Vogel. The Bulldogs lost their top two scorers from a year ago, but do bring back senior Abby Wright and junior Emma O'Neil.

2. Softball - Franklinville at Southwestern, 4:30 p.m.

The Haskell sisters aren't just lethal on the basketball court. They know how to ball on the diamond, too. Ally, a junior who was named second team All-State in Class D last year, returns as the ace of the pitching staff. Dani, a freshman, was first team All-CCAA East II.

Southwestern went 12-4 last season and return first team All-CCAA West I selections in fifth-year senior Sydney Burk and third-year sophomore Erin Radack.

3. Baseball - Grand Island at St. Joe's, 4:30 p.m.

Grand Island's season and Niagara Frontier League opener against Niagara Wheatfield yesterday was postponed. Seniors Bryce Jelinick and Sean Pufpaff are part of the returning contingent for the Vikings.

It's also the first game for St. Joe's, which went 18-8 last season. The Marauders return seniors Luke Pierce, Dennis Gagliardo and Andrew Short, among others.

4. Boys lacrosse - Gowanda at Medina, 5 p.m.

Medina (1-0) and Gowanda (0-0) square off in the first Class D contest of the season. The Panthers went 15-4 last season, including 17-11 and 16-10 wins over the Mustangs. Medina, which was 7-10 last year, won a 12-10 game over Lockport in its season opener on Monday.
