Buffalo fundraiser brought in more than $45,000 for fire victims

A fundraiser for the victims of a fire that destroyed a Buffalo apartment building raised more than $45,000, organizers of the event announced.

Fire ripped through the Lafayette-Barton Apartments on the West Side on March 11, leaving more than 80 people without a home. Several families escaped with only the clothes they were wearing.

An outpouring of help from the community for victims of fire

Laila Ismail and Juweria Dahir, who are members of the group HEAL International, organized the fundraiser as well as a weeklong clothing and houseware drive to help the displaced families get back on their feet.

The fundraiser was held March 18 at the Jericho Road Community Health Center where the fire victims were given the opportunity to pick through items they wanted to take to their new homes. The money that was raised will be given to the families, with larger amounts going to people who lost more of their belongings.
